What we do

Painting and decorating

The core trade. Interior and exterior painting and decorating for homes and small commercial property across Portsmouth and the surrounding towns, with the preparation done properly so the finish is still there in five years rather than five months.

What is included

Every painting and decorating job, covered properly

Preparation before paint

Filling, sanding, caulking, raking out cracks and stabilising anything chalky or flaking. Most of the days on a decorating job are prep, and it is the only part that decides how long the finish lasts. A quick coat over a bad surface looks fine for a fortnight and then tells on you.

Walls, ceilings and woodwork

Rooms taken from bare or tired to finished: ceilings cut in clean, walls rolled evenly, and skirtings, architraves, doors and frames brought up in the sheen you actually want rather than whatever was in the van.

Masonry and render paint

Exterior walls washed down, made good, stabilised where needed, then coated in a breathable masonry paint that suits the substrate. Render, pebbledash, brick and blockwork all take a different approach, and we say which one before starting.

Doors, windows, fascias and metalwork

Timber windows and doors burnt off or sanded back where they need it, knots treated, primed and finished. Fascias, soffits, railings and gates prepped and coated so the rust does not come back through in a year.

Wallpaper hanging and stripping

Papering hung with the pattern set out from the right wall, and old paper taken off and the wall put right rather than skimmed over. Feature walls, full rooms and lining paper before painting.

One room or the whole house

A single bedroom, a hall, stairs and landing, a full house before you move in, or an exterior in one go. Small jobs are quoted the same way as big ones, so nothing gets padded because it was worth the trip.

Questions

Asked and answered

How much does it cost to have a room decorated?

It depends far more on the state of the walls than on the size of the room. A tidy bedroom that just needs filling and two coats is a very different job from one where the paper is coming off and the woodwork has been painted over six times. We come and look, tell you what the prep will actually involve, and give you a fixed price for the whole thing rather than a day rate that quietly grows.

Do you supply the paint or do I?

Either. Most people let us supply it, because we buy trade and can tell you which product suits the surface, but plenty of customers have already chosen a colour from a particular range and want that used. If you supply it, just make sure there is enough, because half a tin short in the middle of a wall is the one thing that spoils a finish.

How long will decorating take?

A single room is normally one to three days depending on the prep and the woodwork. A hall, stairs and landing is usually three to four because of the access and the amount of cutting in. A full house exterior runs anywhere from four days to a fortnight depending on the size, the height and how much repair work the walls need first. You get a realistic number before we start, not an optimistic one.

Will you move furniture and cover the floors?

Yes. Furniture goes to the middle of the room or out of it, everything is sheeted, floors are covered, and it all goes back at the end. Small things like sockets, handles and curtain poles come off rather than being cut around, which is why the edges look right afterwards.

What time of year can exterior painting be done?

Realistically March to October in Hampshire, with the shoulder months watched carefully. Masonry paint needs a dry surface and temperatures above about eight degrees to cure properly, and the coast brings its own damp. We would rather move an exterior back a fortnight than put paint on a wall that is not ready for it.

Do you do commercial as well as houses?

Yes, on the smaller commercial side: offices, shops, flats, communal areas and landlord property. Work can be planned around opening hours or done between tenancies, and the quote and the invoicing are set up the way a business needs them.
