What we do

Gutter clearing

Gutters vacuumed clear from the ground and downpipes checked, before blocked water starts running down the wall and damaging your render, your brickwork and eventually the inside of the building. It is the cheapest job on this website and the one that prevents the most expensive ones.

What is included

Every gutter clear, covered properly

Vacuumed clear from the ground

A gutter vacuum on a carbon pole reaches the guttering without a ladder touching the house. Moss, leaves, silt and the odd tennis ball come out into the machine rather than down the wall or over your patio.

Downpipes checked and cleared

A clean gutter running into a blocked downpipe is still a blocked gutter. Every downpipe gets checked for flow, and blockages at the shoe or the bend are cleared rather than left for the next heavy rain to find.

Camera check before and after

A camera on the pole means you can see what was in the gutter and see it empty afterwards. It also picks up the things you would otherwise only find in a storm: a dropped bracket, a split joint, a section running the wrong way.

Joints, brackets and leaks spotted

Anything obviously wrong gets reported with a photo rather than quietly ignored. Small repairs like a resealed joint or a refixed bracket are usually a quick job once we are already there.

Conservatory and extension gutters

The low level runs that nobody thinks about until the conservatory roof starts pooling. Cleared the same way, along with the box gutters between an extension and the main roof where they can be reached safely.

Debris taken away

What comes out of the gutter goes in the van, not in a heap by your back door or spread across the border underneath. The ground gets rinsed off before we leave.

Questions

Asked and answered

How often should gutters be cleared?

Once a year for most houses, and twice for anything with trees over it or near it. Autumn is the obvious time, after the leaves have come down and before the winter rain, but a spring clear catches the moss and the seed that has washed down off the roof over the winter.

What happens if gutters are left blocked?

Water goes over the front edge and runs down the wall. On render that means green staining and eventually saturated, blown render. On brick it means damp working through to the inside wall and in a bad winter frost damage to the pointing. It also rots fascias and soffits from behind, and a fascia run costs many times what a gutter clear does.

Do you need to put a ladder against my house?

No. The gutter vacuum works from the ground on a pole, so nothing leans on your guttering or your conservatory. That is safer for the operator and it also means we are not putting weight on the very brackets we are there to protect.

Can you clear gutters on a three storey house?

Usually yes. The poles reach to roughly three storeys, which covers most terraced and townhouse properties around Portsmouth and Southsea. Anything higher, or anything with an awkward roof shape, we will look at first and tell you honestly if it needs a tower instead.

Will you tell me if something is broken up there?

Yes, with a photo. We would rather show you a split joint or a sagging bracket than say nothing and have you find it in February. Most of it is a small fix, and none of it is a reason to sell you a whole new gutter run.

Do you clear gutters in winter?

Yes. Winter is when a blocked gutter does its damage, so if you have water pouring over the front in a storm it is worth getting done rather than waiting for spring. The only thing that stops us is genuine ice or high wind on the day.
